Doris Makes Ireland Team While Joe McCarthy Left Out
Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the fall Tests, but Joe McCarthy is absent.
The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash also miss out due to injury, and number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation following the summer tour.
Leinster forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities states new Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".
After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, the team will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at number 15.
Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in Ireland A's loss by England in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province lock Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who started all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain if the captain does not regain full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in the capital on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
